Goa’s Feni - Have
been to Goa and not tasted Feni seems to be a sheer absurdity.
Feni of Goa is the native liquor that has grown hugely popular
around the globe. Feni is the most favored local drink among
the hard drinks. As far as Feni in Goa is concerned, the warmth
of the sip and the pleasure of the lift go their ways in making
you feel on top of the world after guzzling just a couple
of them.
Feni in Goa is an intoxicating locally brewed clear and strong
drink that are chiefly of two types- Cashew Feni and Coconut
Feni. Cashew feni is prepared out of the juice of cashew apples
whereas coconut feni is made from the toddy collected by toddy
tappers. Though coconut feni has its own loyal following,
cashew feni is preferred by many because of its flavor.
Preparation of Goa’s Feni is quite an interesting procedure where
the cashew or coconut extract is left to ferment for a couple
of days. They are then distilled to yield 'Uraq', the cruder
version. Further distillations yield Feni that contains 30
to 35% alcohol. It can be consumed fresh or left to mature
in earthen jars. To prepare Cajuchi or Cashew Feni the cashew
apples are crushed and the pulp is arranged in the shape of
a cake in the coimbi and tied with a string. A huge boulder
is then placed on top of it. This is followed by the trickling
of the juice in a clean form that is called Neero. The final
quota of juice which trickles out in a clean form is called
Neero.
The best place to enjoy the Feni in Goa is the Tavernas.
A log of wood and few tables and stools are what comprise
the Tavernas. The sea-facing Tavernas provide the perfect
ambience to savor the sips of Feni. Goans love Goa’s Feni and though
booze here is cheaper than other places in India, Feni tops
them all. Goans have taken their love of this drink to Middle
East, Europe, Australia and Canada, where its demand and fans
are increasing day by day.
