 Situated
at a distance of 200km from Mangalore and 56km from Karwar
lies the Gokarna which is formed between the confluence of
River Gangavali and Agnashini .There are many temples in this
region and this place is regarded as a sacred place by the
Hindus. It is believed if one takes a bath here one is liberated
from one's sins. Gokarna is also famous for its picturesque
beauty . There are four serene beaches near Gokarna of which
the most famous is Om beach. Others are Kudle Half Moon,Paradise,all
these are noted for their picturesque beauty and tranquil
surroundings.
Excursion to Gokarna and Om Beach got its name for its shape like the Hindu auspicious
sign OM.The beaches are still untouched and far removed from
the humdrums of the city.
Gokarna is most often visited by Hindus for performing the
last rites of their loved ones. It is believed that last rites
performed here is same as those performed at Kashi or Varanasi.
Gokarna is shaped like the cow's ear , thus it has earned
the name and is considered auspicious.It is also known as
Rudra Yoni and Adi Gokarna.
The temples here are
- Mahabaleshwara Temple , also called
the Kashi of South.Hindus perform the last rites here .Here
the Maha Shivrathri is celebrated with great fervour in February.
- Shri Maha Ganapati Temple : Dedicated
to Lord Ganesha.
- Koti-tirtha Kund: It is believed
to be created by Garuda.
- Krishan Temple: Here it is said
that Lord Krishna went for penance .
- Ram-tirtha: It is dedicated to Lord
Venkataeswara nestled atop a hill this has a splendid view
of the sea.
- Bhadrakali Temple: Dedicated to
Goddess Kali.
The tranquil surroundings with the scenic beauty as well as
the temples which are all dotted here makes Gokarna and OM
beach a perfect getaway if you want solitude and bliss .You
will get here a lots of hotels,lodges etc so accommodation
is not a problem at all.The places where you can stay here
