Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary in Goa is situated at Molem town
and is 28km from Ponda . This is the largest of the four protected
wildlife sanctuary in Goa and covers an area of 240 sq km
. It is nestled on the foothills of the Sahyadri Range and
the dense forest which you find here extends to Maharashtra
and Karnataka as well.
The sanctuary is located on the eastern boundary of Goa and
is 53 km from Panaji,the capital of Goa . Thus it is easily
accessible both by rail and road.
The vegetation which you can find here are evergreen and
deciduous trees.In the sanctuary you have the Molem National
Park . Varieties of wild animals are found here but you need
some time here, then only you will be able to see many animals
sheltered in Bhagvan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary at Molem like
- Gaur,
- Sambar,
- Leopards,
- Spotted Deer,
- Slender Loris,
- Jungle Cats,
- Malayan Giant Squirrels,
- Pythons ,Cobras
The Bhagvan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary at Molem is also known for
leopards,elephants,Gaur or Indian bison. You need a little
amount of luck and tenacity to spot these though.
More feasible option is to view the wild life from Devil's
Canyon View Point , this is an unusual combination of rocks,canyon
and underground channel through Dudhsagar River flows for
some time. Bird watchers can have luck in watching some rare
birds from here. You can also visit the famous Temple of Tambdi
Surla of the Kadambas here.This temple is basalt lava rock
and is dedicated to Lord Shiva, it was built in 13th century.
Also admire the exquisite scenic beauty of Dudhsagar Waterfalls
while you are in a train journey from Mangalore to Mandovi.
Molem has many comfortable cottages and dormitories constructed
by Department of Tourism , so accommodation is not a problem
at Bhagvan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary at Molem. You can get vehicular
access to the main park after seeking permission from Range
Forest Officer whom you can find at Nature Education Center
which is just 100m from the Molem National Park.
Best time to visit the park is in the early morning or late
evenings. This sanctuary is in the route of NH 4A , the national
highway connecting Ponda to Belgaum and thus interstate buses
are also available . Regular train service also available
from Ponda to Molem
