The Church of St. Anne at Talaulim in Goa

The Church of St.Anne at Talaulim in GoaGoa church - There are many churches in Goa. Of those various churches, The Goa The Church of St. Anne at Talaulim is very popular. Local people in Goa call it Santana. This church outshines other churches in Goa by its beautiful architecture. It was rebuilt by the combined efforts of Mons Francisco do Rego and villagers. Due to some reasons, Mons Francisco do Rego could not finish this reconstruction. Later, it was Fr Antonio Francisco da Cunha who took up the charge and completed it in 1965.

The Goa The Church of St. Anne at Talaulim is located on the bank of the Siridao River. The main altar in the church is dedicated to St. Anne, the mother of Mary. However, the architectural brilliance of this Goa church lies in the amalgamation of architectural styles of India and western countries.

The main altar which is dedicated to St. Anne the Mother of Mary is related to many stories. The story or say legend is narrated by Fr F de Souza in his 'Oriente Conquistado'. According to the legend, some devotees bought the site which was later called the 'Quinta de Sant Ana'. It was used by the students of the 'Colegio de S Paulo' for leisure hours. Some time later, the priest who was residing in the vicinity was given a task to convert the villagers of Moula and Talaulim. He then made a decision to build a small hermitage. Somehow he faced failure when it came to consecrate the hermitage in honor of any celebrated saint. But one day, Bartalomeu Marchon a local resident said that he saw an old woman coming down the hill. According to him this old woman claimed that the hermitage was her residence. The priest did not know the name of this lady but propagated this news throughout the village. On hearing about it, an old Brahmin lady, also expressed that when she was seriously ill the same old lady appeared to her in her dreams, telling her to rise from the bed. The old Brahmin lady said that this lady called herself Anne. Not only this, the Brahmin lady also said that she wanted a house in the village. The old Brahmin lady also added that this dream resulted in her unimaginable recovery. As a direct consequence to all these, the priest declared to consecrate the shrine to St Anne.

On 26th of July every year, the feast of St Anne is celebrated with much excitement in the Goa The Church of St. Anne at Talaulim. This feast is also called 'Touceachem Fest' or the Cucumber Feast there.
