Goa's St. Cajetan Church - St.
Cajetan Church in Goa is situated on Rua Dirieta off the central
square with its imposing cathedrals and general aura of magnificence.
St. Cajetan Church in Goa was initially called the Church
of Our Lady of Divine Providence. Though the church is consecrated
to Our lady of Divine Providence, yet the church is named
after the founder of the Theatine order, St. Cajetan, a contemporary
of St. Francis Xavier. St. Cajetan was an Italian priest who
wanted to reform the Catholic Church from within and rid it
off its evils.
St. Cajetan Church of Goa is modeled on the Roman Basilica
of St. Peter. In spite of being a diminutive in size, architecturally
this church is considered to be the epitome of many churches.
Goa's St. Cajetan Church is visited by all people, irrespective
of caste, creed and religion. The monumental Corinthian pillars
of the church are its major highlight. As far as the architecture
is concerned, the church sticks to the Corinthian style, both
internally and externally. The gilded altars and intricate
carvings are in rich Baroque style. The Goa's St. Cajetan Church itself is made
up of lime plastered laterite blocks.
The façade of the St. Cajetan Church of Goa features
twin towers that serve as bell towers. The four niches of
the facade are occupied by the statues of four apostles. The
St. Cajetan Church of Goa has a central area and two side aisles with a Baroque
interior richly ornamented with gilded altars and rare paintings.
Though the façade is classical in style, the motifs
used for the interior décor is tempered by native art.
The Rococo style has been utilized in the construction of
the pulpit which is speaks highly of the consummate skill
of the Goan craftsmen. The majestic cupola completes the grand
look of the church
