Temples in Goa - Shri Mahalsa Narayan Temple in Goa,a temple in Goa is situated in the
village Mardol, which is just 1km from Mangueshi.
This is the 17th century temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu's
incarnation, Mohini (Narayani)and his consort Goddess Lakshmi
(Mahalsa).
Shri Mahalsa Narayani is considered the family deity or Kuladevata
of many Hindus, in western and southern India.
Shri Mahalsa's main temple is situated at Mardol village in
Goa and other temples also exists in the states of Karnataka,
Kerala, Maharashtra and Gujarat
The Shri Mahalsa Narayan Temple in Goa was earlier situated in the village of Verna
in Salcette Taluka of Goa, long before Portuguese occupied
Goa. Now the premises of the temple nestled on the beautiful
plateau was historically known Varenyapur or Varunapur and
locally known as Old Mardol.
There is no historical evidence as to when this temple was
built at Varenyapur or as to who brought the deity here.
A unique feature in Shri Mahalsa Narayan Temple in Goa
is the appearance of Shri Mahalsa in different Alankaars at
different times , sometimes during various times of the day.
The Dipa Stambha of the temple is splendid 21 tiers,held by
Kurma , the tortoise incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The Mnadapa
of the temple has intricate wood carvings and parakeet panels
on the ceiling and huge rounded pillars hold the Sabhamandapa
at the entrance.
The ardent devotee sees the deity in the form of many Gods
and Godesses Here at the temple daily after Nirmalya Visarjan,
the deity is decorated with Kumari Alankaar. On every Ekadashi,
or first moon the deity is decorated with Shri Vithoba Alankaar.
