Se
Cathedral Church in Goa is consecrated to St. Catherine. It
is also called the Chapel of St Catherine and St Catherine's
Cathedral. It is believed that on 25th November 1510, Alfonso
de Albuquerque won Goa. This day was the feast day of St.
Catherine. So he dedicated this cathedral to her.
Belonging to 16th century, Goa Se Cathedral Church is
an exemplar of magnificence and grandeur. It is the largest
church in Asia. It was built under the guidance of Portuguese
Viceroy, Redondo. It is held that the main motive behind constructing
this church was to exhibit the splendor and power of his nation.
And at last when this edifice was ready, it came out to be
bigger than any of the churches in Portugal.
In 1562, the process of building Goa Se Cathedral Church
was started which finally ended by 1619. This church was made
during the reign of King Dom Sebastiao. Although its construction
ended in 1619 but the main altars were built in 1640.
Goa Se Cathedral Church is located to the west of the
square in Goa known as Terreiro de Sabaio. This church was
basically built for the Dominicans.
The architecture of Se Cathedral Church in Goa boasts of
Portuguese and Gothic elements. It is 250 feet tall and 181
feet broad. Its ornamental façade is however 115 feet
in height. Previously, the church had two towers on both the
sides of the façade. But in 1776 the crumbling of southern
tower reduced the number of towers. It had not been reconstructed
ever since. And today, the absence of this tower has added
to the glory of Se Cathedral Church.
The most important part of Se Cathedral Church in Goa is
that it houses Chapel of the Cross of Miracles in which the
vision of Christ appeared. It is believed that the size of
this cross is growing. However, before this the Se Cathedral
Church also held the exposition of hallowed relics of St.
Francis Xavier to the public.
