Ruins
of Church of St. Augustine in Goa hold importance in the history
of Goa. It is believed that on 3rd September 1572, the Church
of St. Augustine was built by the combined efforts of 12 Augustine
Friars. They built this church on the Holy Hill at Old Goa.
In 1602, construction of this church finished. The Church
of St Augustine was supposed to be the biggest church in Goa.
However, due to the ban imposed on Augustines by Portuguese
government later, they pulled down the church and the convent
located beside. Today, only the ruins of both the church and
convent can be seen.
Amidst the ruins of Church of St. Augustine in Goa, a 46
meter high bell tower without the bell is standing. This bell
tower is said to be belonging to one of the four of the St.
Augustine Churches that once stood there. The bell from the
bell tower was however put in the Fort Aguada Light House
in later days. This bell was kept there from 1841 to 1871
AD. From here, finally the bell was taken to the Our Lady
of Immaculate Conception at Panaji in 1871 AD. Today, this
bell is found in good working conditions.
In the past times, the Goa Ruins of Church of St. Augustine had four altars,
eight chapels, and a convent with many cells. However, between
1931 and 1938 a considerable portion of this church fell down.
Nevertheless, the convent was used for missionary and charity
work by the charitable institution of the Misericordia for
a period of time. But at the end, this also faced negligence
and whereby the vault on the site fell. Due to all these,
the Government seized this property and sold the materials
of the remains of the church in 1843.
