The Church of St.Paul in Goa was in progress as an institution
of the Holy Faith for training young converts by two priests
namely Diogo de Borba and Miguel Vaz who had recognized the
Santa Fe confraternity. The edifice of the church began in
November 1541 and got finished on January 25th 1543, the day
of Feast of Conversion of St. Paul to whom the church was
dedicated.
The church also housed an eminent college and library. The
College of St Paul was measured among the leading in India.
Besides imparting basic education, higher education in Music,
Latin, Arts and sciences was also taught.
The College had a large library and Asia's first printing
press. There were also numerous other buildings to the St
Paul's College. Three of them were a Novitiate, a Hospital
and a house to shelter the newly converted.
Goa church - The church is also the place where the martyrs of Cuncolim
lie covered. However, by the year 1827, the College and the
Church of St Paul was in fiasco. The Church of St Paul was
demolished in 1829 by the Government. Only the portico was
spared. The presence of Francis Xavier was the greatest respect
that this institution has received so far. The first public
elucidation of his body after his death took place in the
Church of St. Paul.
