Church building in Goa - The
Church of Mary Immaculate Conception is a eminent landmark
of the city. It is one of the most admired tourist spots and
visitors flock to see the church in large numbers. As soon
as evening sets in, this huge monument is transformed into
a shiny and glowing display as it is lit up with many small
electric bulbs. The Church bell boasts to be the 2nd largest
in the World.
The Church of Mary Immaculate was among the first ones to
be built in Goa. It is estimated being there by 1541. The
early church was entirely re-built from its elementary structure
in 1619. The core architecture of the church is pretty inspiring
despite being simple. The backdrop of the main altar is admirable
as it is ornately designed.
The most striking structure remains the two altars flanking
the main altar on the sides. One is commemorated to Jesus
crucified and the other is dedicated to Our Lady of Rosary.
The main draw is its wonderful architecture and enlightenment
at night. Regular buses ply from Panaji to reach Church of
Mary Immaculate Conception.
In the south transept to the right of the major altar is
a Chapel of St. Francis Xavier, whose glass-encased statue
occupies the heart of the reredos.
