brief history
The churches and cathedrals in Goa have their own charm as
they have beautiful architecture and are very elegant looking.
They provide a very fascinating felling for the visitors from
all over the nation. The St. Monica Church and Convent in Goa is one such church which has always been a center of
attraction for its unique history. This is an enormous three
storied building and its construction was started in 1606
and completed in 1627. It was earlier known as the Royal Monastery
because of the royal patronage. Now this building is used
as a nunnery which was commenced in the year 1964.

Architecture of the building
St. Monica Church and Convent in Goa is built with the laterite
and firstly plastered with the lime. It has a square shape
with a huge inner courtyard. There a number of cells and halls
which are reminiscent of the old patronage of the church.
The domed part of the church is elegantly and dexterously
painted. These are decorated with the paintings of flowers
and some of the scenes from the Holy Bible. The St. Monica Church and Convent in Goa is one of the rarest evidence
of the aesthetic perception of the architecture and is still
able to captivate the visitors by its beauty and elegance
which is quite becoming to its architectural stance. Despite
of its destruction in a fire in the year 1636 it was re-built
the next year. The Church and Convent of St. Monica in Goa
have eleven chapels. This church is dedicated to St. Mary.
