The Goa’s The Chapel of St. Catherine has a historical importance.
It was constructed on a site where there stood a gate through
which the Portuguese had infiltrated into Old Goa. The Church
was enlarged during the tenure of the Governor Jorge Cabral
who installed a tablet that corroborates the presence of the
gateway and the historical event of the conquest of Governor
Alfonso de Albuquerque who took the city away from the Mohammedans
on the day of St. Catherine in the year 1510.
The Goa’s The Chapel of St. Catherine was elevated to the status
of a cathedral by Pope Paul III by a Bull issued in 1534 and
it remained so till the new Cathedral was constructed. The
chapel is built of laterite blocks and sports two towers on
either side of the façade.
