Situated ideally on the banks of Mandovi River in Old Goa,

The words Bom Jesus in the name of the church Basilica of
Bom Jesus stand for 'Infant Jesus' or 'Good Jesus'. Basilica

baroque architectures in India. Not only this, it is also
famed for being India's first Minor Basilica.
The layout of the Goa Basilica of Bom Jesus has simple
Renaissance patterns. It's a beautiful structure which includes
white marble and has exquisite gilded altars decorated with
frescoes and inlay work. Its intricately carved basalt embellishments
have rendered its façade richest look in Goa. It also
displays beautiful paintings depicting the life of St. Francis
Xavier.
In the Goa Basilica of Bom Jesus sacred relics of St.
Francis Xavier, patron saint of Goa who died in 1552 is stored.
It is believed that the mortal remains of the saint were bestowed
to the church by Cosimo de Medici III, Grand Duke of Tuscany.
The mortal remain of St. Francis Xavier is kept in airtight
glass coffin positioned in a silver casket crafted by a 17th
century Florentine sculptor, Giovanni Batista Foggini.
It is believed that the body of St. Francis Xavier when was
transferred to Goa, it remained as fresh as when it was buried.
And it is with due respect to this, that thousands of devotees
are attracted from all over the world and an 'Exposition'
or public viewing of his body takes place.
