Mormugao Fort in Goa is near the internationally famous Marmagoa Harbor. It was built to protect the harbor situated near the Vasco da Gama town.

Its work started in 1624. It covered an area of six miles in circumference, controlled towering bulwarks, three magazines, five prisons, a chapel and quarters for the guard.

It had 53 guns and a garrison with 4 officers, and was an important fortress on the western coast. Unfortunately, except the chapel and a portion of the boundary wall, little is left of this fort.

The Mormugao Fort stands majestically at the entrance of the Margao Port. The 1624 built fort is one of the major tourist attractions of the state of Goa.

Close to the Varca Beach, the Mormugao Fort has a valuable inscription on the fort's gate. This inscription includes names of Dom Fransisco Da Gama, King Dom Fillip etc.

The Mormugao Fort has great historical importance attached to it. This has increased its popularity among the history loving people.
