Goa
has seen many invaders and it has a turbulent past with the
invasion of Portuguese, Mughals and even the invasion by other
Indian rulers. Always there was a constant tussle for power
and thus a number of forts in Goa were built which are reminder
to the past and a legacy to be cherished by the tourists.
One of such forts is the Chapora fort in Goa which was built
by Adil Shah of Bijapur on the southern promontory of the
Chapora River.
History of Chapora Fort in Goa:
Also known as "Shahpur" this was constructed of
red laterite stones and stood as a bastion, crowning the rocky
cliff , it was further enhanced by the Portuguese in 1617
to check the Muslim and Maratha . The Chapora fort's control
kept on shifting from Marathas to Portuguese. It came in the
hands of the Maratha King ,Sambhaj who won over the Portuguese
in 1684.But he has to withdraw after stiff local opposition
in 1717. When the Portuguese again got control they rebuilt
the Chapora Fort with underground tunnels but they lost it
again in 1739 to the Marathas. The Portuguese again regained
control two years later but finally deserted it as the empire
continued to extend farther North, known as the New Conquests.
This Fort is now in ruins , only the massive walls and some
scattered tombstones is what now left of the Chapora Fort.
