Caves in Goa
Goa caves - Goa is marked by the presence of beautiful beach places,
seafood, exquisite sights and a lot more. But one thing it
is equally famous for is the caves. Caves in Goa are one of
the definite attractions for the tourists from all over the
place. These Goa caves have a mystery behind them which the archaeologists
have been trying to unfold and have also been successful in
unveiling the facts and the point of their origin. Caves of
Goa are archaic and are the treasure trove to many of the
historical facts which they possess with them. The archaeologists
have also been able to draw conclusions that say once the
early man used to be in Goa. Many stone tools of the Neolithic
age have been found in the Malangini cave, at the bed of Mandovi
river in Shirago. Even the vestiges of the microliths and
chalcolithic pottery are found in Goa. Rock carvings discovery
at Pansimal and Kazur led to the fact that early man once
used to dwell here.
Barring a few caves in this area rest of them have been carved
for religious purposes. All these are of laterite. The natural
Caves of Goa is one of the largest and is at Verna. There are
also the Buddhist caves at Rivona. There are three caves at
Narve and quite naïve consisting of Garbagriha
and a Verandah with two pillars. A lingam
was also discovered in this cave. The mount of this portion
is in the shape of a sitting Lion reminiscent of the one seen
on the Ashoka pillar. At the base of the cave is the inscription
in the Brahmi script.
