Goa's Music - Goa
has history of Portuguese dominance since the sixteenth century
which makes its association with the western classical and
popular music quite obvious. Over time Goa's indigenous tunes
have amalgamated with European music to gift the world music
that is quintessentially Goan in character. Music of Goa can
be classified as religious music, theatrical music, dance
music and songs that are belted out on special occasions like
marriage.
Music is the soul of Goa as Goa is replete with music crazy
people. You can't help but let the harmonious notes fall on
your ears and touch a chord in your heart, and in the process
soothe your soul. Goa-Travel.com furnishes useful info on
some of the major types of Goa's Music.
Mando - The Mando is the love song of Goa that is sung by
the Goan Catholics. Mando is often accompanied by dance that
involves a group of boys and girls. The songs cover the entire
spectrum of the emotion of love and the beats of Ghumat and
the romantic and poignant strains of the violin bring out
the feeling very well.
Mando- The Latin Taste - This is a variation of the love
song in the sense that the songs have a Latin American tune.
The initial notes of the song are sad and slow paced but with
the progression of the song the beats become fast. This is
called "Dulpods" or "Durpodha". The boys
and the girls sing the alternate lines of the song or might
sing in chorus.
Suvari - Suvari is a traditional folk music of Goa that is
considered a sort of tone setter to all Hindu religious and
festival performances. Being essentially orchestral in nature,
it relies heavily on 'Laya' (tune) and 'Tal' (beat), because
of the presence of few spoken words. The orchestra consists
of 'Ghumat', 'Shamel', Cymbals and sometimes 'Shehnai' and
'Surt'.
Electronic Music - Goa is also earned the reputation of being
home to the electronic music. The evolution of this genre
can be traced back to the 1960's when Goa was undergoing a
transformation as a popular tourist destination, thanks to
the hippies from UK and US. The most popular form of this
music is known as Goa Trance. It is a vibrant and psychedelic
dance music.
Other forms of Music of Goa include "Banvad", "Cantaram",
"Dasra Vadan", "Gadya Ramayan", "Gaun
Kani", "Gosavi Gayan", "Gudulya Geetam",
"Jat", "Lagan Geet", "Lavni",
