Ladinha or Ladin is a Thanksgiving Festival in Goa , meaning 'litany
to the Virgin Mary'. In this a person who sponsors the Ladin
offers thanksgiving to the lord for material as well as spiritual
gains which the person has received or want to get such grace
in future in his life. Every year a different person sponsors
the Ladin .
Though in this festival in Goa, anyone can thank God for
his unlimited grace , even though he or she may not be sponsoring
the Ladin or Ladinha .
The Ladin or Ladinha in Goa is celebrated with much fervor
and reverence in Goa and the preparations begin with the purchase
of grams,Branco wine,candles etc. The family altar is decorated
with flowers,creepers as well as crotons neatly laid out in
vase.
Thanksgiving Festival in Goa - The gram which is soaked overnight is boiled and then coconut
chips are shredded to be mixed with the gram.The people sing
litany , hymns, prayers with violin serving as accompaniment.
The choirmaster of the village or the local violinist , co-ordinates
the songs of the litany or thanksgiving.
The Immaculate Conception of Mother Mary is another festival
associated with the Ladin or Ladinha in Goa. In this festival
in Goa, farmers offer the first harvest of milk filled corn
to God. This offering is done as a prayer to God for good
harvest next year. This festival does not have a fixed date
but is generally celebrated in December every year.
