Carnival of Goa is so well-liked that it is the most eagerly awaited event both by the locals as well as the tourists.

Carnival is derived from the Portuguese word 'Carnaval', which means 'to take away meat'.

It is the beginning of the period of 40 days of fasting of Lent. During this period abstinence from meat is compulsory.

Introduced by the Portuguese in the 18th century, Goa Carnival History is a three-day festival and is celebrated mostly by the Christians.

In due course of time the carnival of Goa absorbed some of the Hindu traditions and has crossed the boundaries of the state or religion.

The carnival takes place in the month of February. The Customs of Goa Carnival usually begins on Sabado Gordo, i.e.,

Fat Saturday and concludes on Shrove Tuesday, i.e., Fat Tuesday. It continues for three days and nights.

The highlight of the striking frenzy of merriment is the appointment and arrival of “KING MOMO”

and his retinue to the capital city Panaji on "Fat Saturday", the eve of Carnival.

Goa Carnival History, it was introduced by its other rulers. It resisted the fun loving culture of Goa.

A king of chaos called "Momo" is chosen and he presides over the three day activity.

Initially carnival was in a more rural and raucous form. Flour, eggs,

oranges, lemons, mud, sand-filled gloves along with dirty water, and a variety of liquids and glue were targeted at the passer bys.

People used to throw old pans, pots, and other kitchen utensils out of the windows as an emblematic gesture to discard the old and dirty before the Lenten fast.

Even more extreme was the battleground scene where the weapons were plaster-of-Paris eggs, wax lemons, corncobs and beans.

These blows were reciprocated with brooms and wooden spoons.

Endless lavish feasts, cakes and pastries being distributed by convents, people used to gorge on food for three days.

Carnival is Goa is fun, frolic, loud music, dance and above all complete enjoyment.
