Goa festivals - Goa
is a kaleidoscopic land where various feasts and festivals
are celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm. And of those
many festivals one which really attracts the most is Carnival
in Goa. Carnival in Goa is really a unique and exclusive festival.
It was introduced by the Portuguese who reigned here for more
than five hundred years.
Carnival in Goa is celebrated for three days. It is primarily
a Christian celebration but the remarkable point about this
is that it has adopted some Hindu traditions as well. In its
celebration western dance forms and pageantry can also be
seen.
Goa carnivals attract thousands of local people and the tourists
from across the country. Held in the month of February, this
festival is observed for three days and nights. This carnival
starts when the legendary king Momo takes over the state.
As soon as this happens, numerous light arrangements and music
are organized in the streets. Subsequently, unrestrained festivity
and merry making commences.
Carnival in Goa means organizing huge parades with bands,
dances and floats out all night on the streets, and grand
balls in the evenings. In this carnival primary focus lies
on feasting, dancing and jubilation. However, the end of this
unique festival takes place with red-and-black dance held
by the Clube National in Panajim on the final day.
The nature and origin of carnival in Goa can be associated
with the hedonistic feasts held in ancient Rome and Greece.
Actually speaking, the term 'carnival' implies 'to take away
meat' in Latin. It stands for the expression of the 40 day
period of fasting of Lent, during which people abstain from
taking meat.
No where else in India does this event take place. It is
truly exclusive to Goa. After a period of decline, this festival
was revived to promote tourism. Now its craze has reached
its pinnacle where gay abandon and riotous revelry attracts
thousands of tourists to Goa from all over India every year.
